Drive fails to read the CD inside

* Check for scratches on the surface of the CD.

* Clean the CD surface as dust and sirt on the surface of the CD may be preventing the drive from detecting the disk. Start cleaning with a clean cloth, preferably cotton , starting from a point near the central hole of the cd and take a spiral path for cleaning the surface.

* Make sure that the drive shows up in system properties

* If everything is ok, try running a CD that u hope to run well.

* Restart computer

* Remove drive from device manager and try redetecting it and reinstall drivers

Driver LED remains on constantly

* Data cable may be on backward at the driver or connector connections- Reseat cable and retest.

* Data cable in offset- The data cable may be offset on connector by one or more pins. Reseat cable and retest.

* Replace cable- If both the above tests fail, the it may be adefective cable. Replace it with a good one.

No LED, drive doesnt spin

* Improper configuration of driver- Check BIOS for drive type and see to it that controller is enabled if built in to motherboard

* Bad power supply or power cable is not properly seated- Try reseating the cable. If that doesnt work, measure the voltage output at the wires. The power is okay if 12V and 5V are available.

* Bad data cable- Try replacing it with a good one

* Defective drive- Try replacing the drive

* Controller is not working properly- Replace the controllerand retest. If it is built in to motherboard, disable it thru BIOS, insert a card base controller and retest.

System runs but no video

* Monitor turned off or failure of the same- Check monitor and power chord for the monitor. Replafce it with another one in good condition

Performs POST, but OS will not boot

*improper drivers or incompatible peripheral- Upgrade ur driver utility . Check for compatibility issues.

System gets stuck during or a few seconds after performing POST

* Low heat dessipation - Keep your fist with your thunb and forefinger facing the power and SMPS fans and feel teh heat. If the processor is making "boooooooo" sound and if the cabinet is getting hotter, it implies hat you power fan is not working upto the mark. Your system's heat sink is not that efficient for smooth running of the former. Replace it and use one with higher capacity if needed.
* Improper voltage setting- Check the motherboard and set it for proper core voltage
* Improper motherboard bus speed- Set the motherboard bus speed to a more appropriate one
* Wrong CPU clock multiplier- jumper it for a proper clock multiplier.

System runs, constant beep sound, fan is running, no video

* The problem may be due to dust in RAM- Remove RAM from socket. Clean the slot. Reseat it.
* It may also occur due to improperly seated or failure of graphics card- Try reseating graphics card . If problem persists, try replacing it a new one in good working condition.

System is not functioning, no beeps,POST is not performed

* Peripherals are not plugged correctly- Check all peripherals including motherboard and adapters. Reseat all components, data cables, power cords and other socket components

System is dead, no cursor, no beeps, no fan

There are four possibilities:* Power cord failure- Plug in or replace power cord. Power cords can fail even if they dont show any external symptoms
* Power supply failure- In this case replace the SMPS. If u r going to mend it urself, u may replace it with an SMPS that u kno is in good working condition, otherwise get the help of the manufacturer.
* Motherboard failure- Replace motherboard. Use a motherboard that u kno is in good working condition.
* Memory failure- First take the RAM from the RAM slot and try cleaning the slot and replacing the RAM back into its position. IF it fails, replace the RAM with a new one in good condition. While replacing the RAM, keep in ind that you replace it with another one which is compatible with your system configuration, i.e, if it has the same bus speed and memory etc like the faulty one. If u have multiple slots remove all the RAM except the one in slot number 1 ( to be precise , bank 1) and try to reboot the system. If it fails, retest with the other RAM.
